Welcome from Dean of Students & Vice President of Student Affairs

Dr. Ophelie Rowe Allen is the Dean of Students and Vice President of Student Affairs at the University of New Haven. She has been involved in student development for more than 15 years. She is a first-generation administrator committed to providing a student-centered environment to support students' evolving academic, social, and emotional needs. Dr. Rowe Allen believes that learning takes place inside and outside the classroom. Therefore, she encourages students to make the most of their Charger experience by being open, kind, and bold.

Welcome to the University of New Haven. My name is Ophelie Rowe Allen and I am the Dean of Students. You have come to the right place to learn more about the University of New Haven, as you make an essential decision for the next stage of your academic journey. Today, I will give you an overview of student engagement, and supporting students during the four years of your college.

So what is unique about the University of New Haven? First, it is a place that provides accessible and engage communities for all students. It is an institution that attracts diverse and talented students, faculty and staff from within and outside of the United States, which enhances our distinctive inclusive environments. Secondly, our approach is to ensure that all students have a supportive, transformative and exceptional experience at the University. We have career skill development through student leadership positions, pay jobs on campus, access to excellent recreational facilities, services to attend to your health and wellness needs, membership in various student recognized organizations, and most importantly, being a part of a campus community that values respect and sense of belonging. We ensure that we sustain support and create multiple communities within which all students can learn, develop, and feel that they're cared for. These include the residence hall, various living and learning communities, the commuter community and various multicultural groups supported by the Myatt Center for Diversity Inclusion.

Next engagement, we provide many opportunities for you to engage with your peers in the Charger community. On this platform, you will learn more about engaging in various co curricular activities on campus, be sure to check it out before you leave today. More importantly, we recognize and support students in all forms. We provide prompt and helpful support proactively and reactively so that you as a student can fulfill your potential and be your best self as you transition and navigate your collegiate environment. Supporting services include Counseling and Psychological Services, the Student Health Center, tutoring services, and the Dean of Students Office provides overall support to students and families. I believe that student must be recognized for who they are and what they have become. Therefore, we provide various recognition events on campus, including or loving the ceremony for our LGBT+ community celebration of excellence for our multicultural students, and the leadership award ceremony to support and recognize students for their work and co curricular involvement.

Finally, we are a university that supports diverse population. We are committed to equipping students with critical thinking skills and knowledge to improve themselves. Furthermore, we want you as a student to engage in different perspectives shaped by various experiences and identities that will help you to learn from one another. We strive to develop a community in which you can feel that you belong.

You have taken the first step today. We acknowledge the fears and anxiety that comes with choosing a college. Thank you for the chance to speak about student life at the University of New Haven. We hope you will continue exploring what the charger community can offer to you. Thank you
